Daffodil Wall

Much of the grassy bank below the Bar Walls is planted with daffodils and looks at it's most colourful in April/May. The walls are open dawn to dusk for anyone to walk along, and they provide an alternative view of the city to walking the streets. A keen runner here is even trying to use them as a jogging track, although I think he might change his mind when he has become entangled in a few school parties coming the other way!

  2. I didn't know you could walk the walls in York. Lucca in Italy has some great wall walking around the city too!

  4. It's a lovely place to walk but I've never been there at daffodil time.

  5. The runner in the wall changes the picture completely. I do not like where there are only flowers. Good choice!

  9. I like this photo a lot. It stopped me in my tracks--not just the flowers, but the beautiful wall. What exactly is a Bar Wall? Is it the city wall?

    1. Glad you enjoyed the pic. Yes they are the city walls, around 2 miles of which are still walkable. Fortified gates which resemble castle gatehouses are set into the walls at intervals and used to be the only way into the city. These gates are known as Bars in York and Bar Walls is the local collective term for the whole structure.
