1000 and counting

This bronze model of the city centre of York is sited outside the west end of York Minster. Designed by The Dog Rose Trust it has Braille labels and is set at a height that is wheelchair friendly. Above all it is a tactile model that can be and is enjoyed by any visitor to the city.
This is my 1000th post on CDP. I will be taking a break for the summer but hope to be back in early autumn.

Fisher of Dreams

This sculpture is sited along one of the city cycle tracks and is titled The Fisher of Dreams. The project was funded by a millennium community art scheme and the design chosen by local people. A nearby plaque notes:
The tranquil fisher, deliberately neither male nor female, dreams his (or her) dreams by the river bank, of a time when the 'Flying Scotsman' still steamed over this bridge. Everything seems idyllic - but just remember it is when all seems right with the world, that there is a dog behind you, peeing on your bike!

Keeping Watch

These carved birds are keeping watch outside a house near Fangfoss church. Some very real birds, Rooks, were noisily building their rookery in the nearby trees as I took a walk around.

Sundial

Not much call for a sundial at present but this one is rather fine. It can be found outside the lovely Tudor built St William's College. Come back tomorrow for a closer look at those lions

Wickerwork

This wickerwork daffodil is the nearest we have to the real thing at the moment, but I have seen plenty of leaf spikes starting to show above ground recently.

Hello Ducky!

Having read the sign I have to agree. Phil's Street Art is still on the go, you can read an interview with Phil here. Sorry I missed the snails.

Lost Balloon

Unusual to see this type of street art in York, at first glance I saw a lost balloon, now I am not so sure...

D is for Dalek

With 3 Daleks and a Cyberman on the roof you might be forgiven for wondering just what the 'Last Shop Before Mars' actually sells. It is in fact a petrol station on the outskirts of the city.

Arts Barge Project

This painting of Skeldergate Bridge was part of The Arts Barge Project for the River Festival 2013. The Arts Barge are a not-for -profit arts business working with local communities. Their aim is to fund a permanent barge on the River Ouse to be used as a base for artists and performers

Am I Art?

No Phil, not in this case. See here for more details and make your own mind up if anything else is.

Modern Day Guardians.

This statue is by local artist Ailsa Magnus. It shows a Terry's employee holding a chocolate orange (a confectionery produced locally for many years), a shopper who represents commerce,  and a child, a reference to the future. Members of the local community, including the children at the school featured on the blog here were invited to write down a short phrase, some of which are engraved around the base of the statue. They include:
What's the time?
The past has gone
Why?
Do you like cheese?
Why did my best friend move?
Ban broccoli
What would would you have chosen to write? That's a question by the way not another phrase!

Corner Horse

The Bay Horse on Marygate is that rare beast, a public house that has re-opened and remained open. It is a Grade II listed building sited on a corner, and as I walked past I noticed this stone horse for the first time. It is set into the actual corner of the building which must have made carving the stone into shape extra difficult. It looks rather worn and discoloured but I think that adds to its charm.

Mini Me!

On reviewing some close up pictures of the mosaic in Rowntree Park at home I realised my reflection was captured in the picture above. I make no apologies for the hat, it was a very cold day!

Mosaic Map

This mosaic map of Rowntree Park makes a colouful addition to one of the walls within the Park. Artist Dawn Sharkey worked with a variety of community groups during 2009 on a project called 'Mapping the Park'. After trying out a number of different art techniques they produced this mosaic piece celebrating their memories and feelings about Rowntree Park.

Community Fence

A small piece of waste ground near the cycle track had been fenced-off and made into a community garden, I would not have noticed the garden but for the eye-catching fence.

Friesian Calf

This fabulous bronze calf is in the courtyard of Kings Manor. It is the work of Sally Arnup a leading animalier sculptor who lives just outside York. She manages to convey life and movement in a very special way. This calf looked like he had just stood up on wobbly legs for the first time, his coat still wet and matted from being born.

Funky Street Lighting

This is a street light along one of the many cycle paths in York. Metallic sculptures of various colours shapes and sizes are a bit of a theme along the cycle routes.
