Lanterns in the Snow
Greys Court looks lovely at any time of the year, in the snow the courtyard looks extra special. If all those lanterns were lit at night it would be quite magical.

That Old Lion Again
Regular readers of this blog (discerning folk one and all) might just recognise this lion as it has featured before. It is one of a pair guarding the entrance to the garden of Greys Court, and it rather obligingly posed for this silhouette!!

Dandy Lion
A brief respite from the rainy weather and I couldn't resist another shot of one of the pair of magnificent lions outside Greys Court.

A Close Shave
Walked into one of my favourite York courtyards this week, usually a shady haven from the sun under the London Plane Trees, and this was the sight that greeted me. Mad pollarding or a chance to see the beautiful buildings of Greys Court as they have not been seen for years? Tell me what you think

Grey Lion & Blue Stocking
This splendid stone beast is one of a pair of lions at the entrance to Greys Court in Chapter House Street. This building claims to be the oldest continuously occupied house in Britain dating back in part to 1080.
Elizabeth Montagu (nee Robinson) was born here on Oct 2nd 1718. One of the richest women in England she became a founder member of the Blue Stockings Society in the early 1750s. This was an informal women’s social movement which encouraged education and mutual co-operation. You can read more about them here if you wish.
