View from the Bar
This is Goodramgate viewed from Monk Bar. The street was built to connect the former Eastern Roman gateway to the city (near King’s Square) with the former Northern Roman gateway (near Monk Bar). The street name has evolved since Viking times when this street was owned by or perhaps lived in by a Viking called Gurthrum. In 'A New Exact Plan of the City of York' drawn by John Cossins in 1727 the street is labelled as Gotherme Gate. The white stone on the right of the picture is part of Monk Bar.
