Lions

The York Coat of Arms contains five lions, and it is a symbol that can be seen on many door knockers in the city. No surprise then to find four fine stone examples of the beasts holding up a seat under a city centre sundial.

Grey Lion & Blue Stocking

This splendid stone beast is one of a pair of lions at the entrance to Greys Court in Chapter House Street. This building claims to be the oldest continuously occupied house in Britain dating back in part to 1080.

Elizabeth Montagu (nee Robinson) was born here on Oct 2^nd 1718. One of the richest women in England she became a founder member of the Blue Stockings Society in the early 1750s. This was an informal women’s social movement which encouraged education and mutual co-operation. You can read more about them here if you wish.
