Bit of Blue Sky

There was the odd patch of blue sky around on Saturday, and looking on the bright side the coolish dull weather is helping the daffodils to last longer.

Spring Walls

Even on a dull day the daffodils alongside the city walls look nice and bright.

I is for Inset.....

....into the flagstones of the city walls are several indicators that you should look over the walls at some point to see features in the nearby landscape. The curious square with the crosses drawn on it has always puzzled me.

Wall Walk

Been a while since we visited the city walls. The green mound with the trees growing out of it is Baile Hill, a castle similar to the one you can just see through the trees used to stand here, but there is no sign left of the building now.

Snowy Daffodils

This time last year it was 16C and the daffodils around the city wall were in full flower. Today they were struggling to hold up their heads under a covering of snow

B is for Beyond Bootham Bar

This is a view along the Bar Walls looking back towards Bootham Bar from one of the larger interval towers. This tower has had various names down the centuries, the Bawing Tower, Frost Tower or Robin Hood Tower.

Dawn to Dusk

The city walls are open from dawn to dusk each day for anyone who wishes to walk along them. Many visitors to the city do so of course, and many locals use sections of them as a handy short cut from A to B avoiding the need to cross busy roads. This section of the wall, including the steps, were built in 1834 following the demolition of the original wall and the barbican of Bootham Bar

Walk on the Walls

Been  a while since we visited the city walls. This is the view walking from Micklegate Bar towards Victoria Bar. The terraced houses opposite have a rather sought after view.

Y is for York

This is one of the classic views of York, standing on the city walls looking down Museum Street over the River Ouse and towards York Minster. It is a handsome view any time of year, but especially colourful just now with all the flowers in full bloom.
