John Cabot
Visited Bristol docks recently. I have always liked this statue of John Cabot, it is full of character and he looks like he cannot wait to set sail again. He sailed from Bristol and sighted North America in 1497, no one is quite sure where but New-found-land is the name he gave to his discovery.
A great sailor to be sure. But I think he could have been a little more creative with the naming thing. :-)
ReplyDeleteThese days Newfoundland also goes by the nickname The Rock. Mind you, the Vikings beat John by about five hundred years...
ReplyDeleteAnd it's a remarkable statue!
