Walked into one of my favourite York courtyards this week, usually a shady haven from the sun under the London Plane Trees, and this was the sight that greeted me. Mad pollarding or a chance to see the beautiful buildings of Greys Court as they have not been seen for years? Tell me what you think
I think ugly! Why do this to trees?
ReplyDeleteWe have plane trees growing in rows on our street and they can grow quickly and get out of hand. The council (that planted them) is constantly trying to trim them down and keep them off the overhead powerlines. They can look magnificent in the summer and provide welcome shade, but the leaves in autumn are a nuisance and they can damage drains and the power lines above. I don't think plane trees were the best choice for our street. Another council now plants olive trees, which look wonderful, are easier to manage and they yield lots of fruit!
ReplyDeleteI think perhaps sometimes its best to have them look like this if the alternative was to decide they were too big and they had to go.

ReplyDeleteThey'll make it. I've seen this in Pasadena. The ugly phase is--well, it's ugly. But it won't last forever. I never knew why they did this but NixBlog has a point.
