Pinfold
A view from inside the Pinfold on Tadcaster road near to Knavesmire, an area of common land used for cattle grazing. Pinfold is a Saxon word for an area used to hold straying pigs, sheep and cattle pending payment of a fine by the owner. They were generally situated near main roads.
I often wondered what those bits of land were for. Thanks for the explanation.

I have come across a few of those on the outskirts of towns, quite rare to see them though
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the names--Pinfold, Tadcaster, Knavesmire. I particularly like Knavesmire. Conjures up all sorts of images. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever heard that term before.
ReplyDeleteA new word for the day, Deb!
