Pinfold

A view from inside the Pinfold on Tadcaster road near to Knavesmire, an area of common land used for cattle grazing. Pinfold is a Saxon word for an area used to hold straying pigs, sheep  and cattle pending payment of a fine by the owner. They were generally situated near main roads.

  1. I often wondered what those bits of land were for. Thanks for the explanation.

  2. I have come across a few of those on the outskirts of towns, quite rare to see them though

  3. I'm loving the names--Pinfold, Tadcaster, Knavesmire. I particularly like Knavesmire. Conjures up all sorts of images. :-)
