Sign of the times 1

This was a favourite haunt that sadly closed down just over a year ago. As you can see from the window they did try to diversify but to no avail. Although I shopped in here I also bought books on line. Do you still buy new books from a real rather than a virtual shop?
A real sign of the times is that no business has started up on this site since.

  1. To be honest, I rarely buy books at all these days. I try to borrow from the library as much as I can and when I do purchase a book, it's often in a second-hand shop. But I do think it's a sad thing that these small stores are going the way of the Woolly Mammoth. :(

  2. What a shame it closed- a vegetarian cafe and book store sounds like heaven to me! I mostly only buy second-hand books for myself, from independent stores, charity shops or online stores. And I borrow library books.

  3. Always something that I see with regret, even if bookshop was not one I had ever visited. I bought a bought a book in a real bookshop a week or so back. Like Chrissy I too borrow from the library.

  4. I have never bought a book on-line. I go to one of the small bookstores in the neighbourhood!

  5. Lately I've been reading a lot about the publishing/book industry. In the United States hundreds, if not thousands, of independent bookstores have closed in the last couple of years. (Perhaps this is the case in Britain as well.) It seems to be due to a combination of problems. One is, of course, the recession. Who can afford to spend $25 for a book (about 16 pounds) these days? The other thing is the internet, namely Amazon. So many people who buy do books, buy them online. Amazon is coming under fire, however, for dishonest business practices. We have yet to see what will come of that.
