This splendid coat of arms can be found above one of the entrances to the York Merchant Adventurers' Hall. The motto can be translated as' God give us good fortune' which the merchants wished for in a spiritual as well as financial sense.

The crest is of the Merchant Adventurers of England the York Company only got their own quite recently.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed the York crest has 4 white roses (of course) instead of the 10 red ones shown here and a single lion. There are many fine examples of both around the York hall.
ReplyDeleteObviously the War of the Roses hasn't been forgotten there. Love the coat of arms and how it has been so well maintained.
