These trees behind the ruins of St Mary's Abbey look at their best just now.

Shadow

The shadow of a nearby tree on the walls of St Mary's Abbey caught my eye as I was hurrying past last week. So I went back to take a picture....

Through the Arch

This is a view out of the grounds of St Mary's Abbey towards Marygate. Hard to imagine this gateway has been in use for nearly 1000 years!

York Through the Ages

The sarcophagi in the foreground are Roman from around the first or second century AD. The remains of St Mary's Abbey date from around 1100, the York Wheel seen through the arch of the Abbey was put up last year.

Unseen by most

This is the view revealed by the demolition of the huts in yesterdays post. It shows the wall of St Mary's Abbey and the corner tower (see the more usual view here) from an angle unseen by most since before WW2. There was a bit of an outcry at the removal of the huts by some who felt the city was losing a' valuable piece of modern history'. I for one would rather have this view than preserve a few asbestos ridden wartime huts. The plan is for this space to be landscaped and used to display sculpture which could be an asset for the city, or not depending on the sculptures chosen!.

St Mary-in-the-Mist

The Vale of York is rather fog prone at this time of year. Here is a recent picture of the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey looking positively Gothic in the November mist.
