Boer War Memorial

Meant to post this yesterday, better late than never. Most of the war memorials in York are quite plain. The exception is the Boer War Memorial next to the Minster. It is an elaborately decorated column with niches near the top of the monument for statues representing the men and women who served. On this side of the memorial two soldiers and a nurse look down on passers-by. One of the niches stands empty save for a plaque stating that the occupant was struck by lightening!

Compass

This stone compass is sited near the city walls, visitors arriving by train will almost certainly pass it on their way into the city. It probably served as a useful orientation mark before GPS was widely available!
The quote is from Ezekiel - "Thou wilt say unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live."—Ezekiel 37:9. Given the date of 1946 it is presumably a second world war memorial

York Minster Memorial Screen

This wooden memorial screen is in the North Transept of York Minster.  Each door bears the crest of a regiment and written inside are the names of the women who served in that regiment and were killed during the First World War. The doors can be opened by anyone who cares to look inside.

The screen also records that the Five Sisters window in York Minster was restored by women in memory of their fallen comrades. The window is now a memorial to the women who gave their lives in both World Wars.
