Wet cobblestones

This picture of the River Ouse sums up York over the last few months. Let's hope it stops raining in 2013 and the river retreats back to within it's usual boundaries.

Flood Prevention

If the river floods locals look to the fire brigade for help. However the fire station is near the river, so what to do to stop the water coming in through the side door of the fire station? Easy, fill the doorway with concrete and stencil a handle on it, oh and a penguin too.

Flooded Fields

A flooded field with winter trees, York Minster, and the York Wheel on the wet and windy skyline. Maybe if we had more trees and plants in gardens rather than decking and gravel all that water (and the birds and insects) would have somewhere to go.

The Water's Edge.....

...was rather closer than it should be in York last month. The Blue Bridge is usually busy with foot and cycle traffic, the blue sign marks the route of one of the cycle paths through the city. The bridge is the same one featured on the blog header so you can see how high the river had risen. Many of the flooded homes and business are still drying out with some of the worst affected having to hack the plaster off downstairs walls back to bare brickwork to allow them to dry out.

Rivers up

Well as we say in these parts 'Rivers up'. Normally you can walk down here but, several days of heavy rain have arrived in York via the River Ouse and the streets around the river are flooded once more. The sign 'Plonkers' refers to a wine bar by the way, not anyone attempting to drive down here......

I sometimes sit on this riverside bench and eat my lunch. Although not today obviously............................

When will it stop Raining?

This was the King Arms yesterday following all the heavy rain we have been having. Steel flood door in place and a hosepipe sticking out of the letterbox! Normally the pub is several metres from the river and those tables are a pleasant place enjoy a drink. I have seen the water as high as the pub sign so as floods go this episode is comparatively minor, but still bad enough for those with homes and business affected.

Save our Ices

It has been raining, very hard, very fast, for a long time. The river is rising, the ice cream cart is in danger............. but relax, fire and rescue are on the scene. Or maybe they fancied a well earned break with a choc ice before the next call out to a flooded property.

Dame Judi Dench Walk

It has been raining a lot in York recently and Dame Judi would need her wellies to stroll along her eponymous walk shown here at present. The metal struts sticking out of the water are handrails down to the riverside walk, and the trees and benches are normally well above the waterline. It is also been very windy but that is more difficult to photograph!
