Overgrown
Much of York cemetery is overgrown and graves are interspersed with wild flowers and grasses, bushes and even trees. Parts of the cemetery where recent burials have taken place are kept tidy, as are some graves which are looked after by York Cemetery Trust. I rather like the less manicured areas, although I know some are appalled by the idea, and it is ideal for encouraging local wildlife.

This looks like one of Nature's strongholds! And it looks enchanting!
ReplyDeleteWhile I hate it when graves are pushed down and vandilised, I love the overgrown areas. It makes what I do into a little treasure hunt. Wonderful picture.
ReplyDeleteBeneath Thy Feet
I like those not so manicured cemeteries. They are more natural.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly approve of this sort of haven for wildlife! It looks so much nicer than those carefully weeded and pruned cemeteries.
ReplyDeleteI like the look too. But at some point won't someone have to mow the grasses? Otherwise, the headstones will just disappear in the bushes and the graves will become completely ignored. That would be sad to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm undecided!
ReplyDeleteI like both aspects: the manicured, and the wild. But I acknowledge that the jungle will eventually take over the more wild areas. I do not mind 'wild' if it appears to be by choice rather than simple neglect.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing worse than a manicured area where markers are knocked down and smashed in some way. However, if nature causes stone to weather and break, that is the way of the world.
I do like this image, and have no qualms myself invading the solitude, and pushing weeds aside with my walking stick, the better to read the inscriptions. I find one of the joys of all aspects of cemeteries to be the wild-life that it encourages, both on the ground and in the air. Makes the task of taphophilia even more enjoyable than normal.
Personally I too prefer the less groomed look and I am sure that the wildlife does too.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful. If and when I'm buried, a spot like this would be my preference.
ReplyDeleteyes, i like this a lot!
ReplyDeleteand manicured landscapes; beeehhh.... where i live everything is extremely manicured, and you cant even play on the grass. could well be a cemetery.. ;)
